Hoch über dem Meer und über der peloponnesischen Stadt Nafplio (Nauplia) thront auf einem kahlen Felsen die stärkste Festung Griechenlands, die Burg Palamidi. Sie ist eine Erweiterung der älteren Festung Akronafplio und wurde im 17. Jahrhundert von den Venezianern auf einem 216 m hohen Felsen über der Stadt angelegt. Von 1711 bis 1714 wurde sie von französischen Festungsingenieuren ausgebaut. Durch Verrat konnte die Festung jedoch schon 1715 von den Osmanen eingenommen werden. Nachdem im griechischen Befreiungskrieg die Osmanen vertrieben worden waren, wurde die Festung als Gefängnis benutzt.

Palamidi ist ein eindrucksvolles Beispiel spätbarocker Festungsbaukunst. Die nach Süden gestaffelte Anordnung und die klaren, geometrischen Formen verleihen der Festung eine schlichte Monumentalität. Weit geschwungene Bögen an den Innen- und Außenmauern, Ziererker und venezianische Ecklogen dienen der Dekoration. An der Vorburg des Hl. Andreas und im ersten zugänglichen Haupthof kann man runde Zierwülste entdecken. Über dem Tor prangt der Löwe, das Wahrzeichen Venedigs. Das östliche Tor der gut erhaltenen Festung ist mit dem Auto bequem zu erreichen. Wer gut zu Fuß ist, kann aber auch die 999 Stufen steile Treppe hinaufsteigen, die von der Stadt zum westlichen Tor der Palamidi-Festung führen. Der Ausblick von oben über den argolischen Golf, die Stadt und die davor liegende kleine Festungsinsel Bourtzi ist überwältigend und lässt einen die Mühen des Aufstiegs schnell vergessen.
